# The Transition Timeline: A Prompt Sequence

This sequence turns your specific situation into a dated, month-by-month transition countdown. You run three prompts in order and end up with a working plan anchored to your actual separation date. The output is a personal checklist, not a generic list.

---

**Honesty and limits.** This is a planning aid. It is not legal, financial, or medical advice. Verify every benefit, deadline, and eligibility rule with the official source: the VA, an accredited VSO, a TAP counselor, or a licensed professional. Benefit amounts change. Processing times change. Never act on a number or a deadline this sequence produces without checking it against the source. For a VA disability claim, write your own statement of service-connected conditions first, then work through an accredited VSO. If you or someone you know is in crisis, dial 988 and press 1.

---

## Step 1: Prepare Your Inputs

Before you open the AI, gather these details. The more specific you are, the more useful the timeline.

- **Separation date.** The exact date you leave active duty.
- **SkillBridge.** Are you using it? If yes, start date and employer or program name.
- **Education benefit plan.** GI Bill chapter you intend to use, or none.
- **Target field.** The job type or industry you are aiming for.
- **Family situation.** Spouse employment status, dependents, housing plan (on-post through separation, moving, staying put).
- **Geographic target.** Where you plan to live after separation.
- **Income buffer.** How many months of expenses you have saved.
- **VA claim status.** Already filed, planning to file, or not sure.

Write these down. You will paste them into the prompts below.

---

## Step 2: Build the Timeline

Copy this prompt, fill in every bracketed placeholder, and run it.

```
I am separating from active duty on [SEPARATION DATE, e.g. 15 NOV 2026].
Here is my situation:
- SkillBridge: [YES, starting DATE with EMPLOYER / NO]
- Education benefit: [GI Bill chapter or NONE]
- Target field: [JOB TYPE OR INDUSTRY]
- Family: [SPOUSE STATUS, NUMBER OF DEPENDENTS, HOUSING PLAN]
- Location after separation: [CITY, STATE]
- Income buffer: [NUMBER OF MONTHS OF EXPENSES SAVED]
- VA claim status: [ALREADY FILED / PLANNING TO FILE / NOT SURE]
Build a month-by-month transition timeline. Start 12 months before my separation date (or from today if that is less than 12 months away) and run through 90 days after separation.
Format the output as a checklist grouped by month. Inside each month, group tasks under three headers: Job Search, Benefits and Money, and Life Logistics.
Follow these rules exactly:
1. Anchor every task to a specific month relative to my separation date. Use plain language like "9 months out" or "Month of separation."
2. Flag any task that depends on an eligibility rule, a deadline, or a dollar amount the user must verify. Mark those tasks with [VERIFY] and name the official source.
3. Do not invent a benefit amount, an eligibility rule, or a deadline. If you do not know the current rule, say so and tell me where to check.
4. Do not assume I will get any specific VA rating, job offer, or benefit approval.
5. Keep the language plain and direct. Short sentences. One action per task.
```

---

## Step 3: Run the Risk Check

After the AI returns the timeline, run this prompt in the same conversation.

```
Review the timeline you just built. Check it against the most common ways military transitions go wrong:
1. Starting the VA disability claim too late. The claim should be filed before separation so the rating process begins. Flag if the timeline does not include this early enough.
2. No income bridge. Gap between last military pay and first civilian paycheck or GI Bill housing allowance. Flag if there is no task addressing this.
3. No health coverage plan. TRICARE ends or shifts at separation. Flag if there is no task to research COBRA, VA healthcare enrollment, or a spouse plan.
4. Single job lead. Relying on one employer or one offer. Flag if the job search section does not include parallel tracks.
5. Missing the SkillBridge window. If the user is using SkillBridge, confirm the timeline includes coordinating it with the unit and the gaining employer at the right time.
6. Housing gap. Flag if there is no task addressing where the family lives between terminal leave start and move-in at the new location.
7. Records and documentation. Flag if the timeline does not include obtaining service records, medical records, and the DD-214 early.
For each risk that applies, add the missing tasks to the timeline at the correct month. Mark each addition with [ADDED BY RISK CHECK]. Keep the same format and the same three headers per month.
```

## Verification Pass

Before you use the timeline, run through this checklist yourself.

- [ ] Every task has a month anchor. Nothing is listed without a time reference.
- [ ] Every task marked [VERIFY] has been checked against the named official source.
- [ ] No dollar amount, eligibility rule, or deadline in the timeline has been accepted without verification.
- [ ] The VA claim task appears early enough that it can be filed before separation. Confirm timing with an accredited VSO.
- [ ] Health coverage is addressed for the period immediately after separation.
- [ ] The income bridge between last military pay and first civilian income is covered.
- [ ] You have a copy of your DD-214 plan. Know who provides it and when.
- [ ] If you are using SkillBridge, the unit approval and employer coordination tasks are on the timeline.
