Accessibility
Accessibility, stated plainly.
What we check on every change, what we have not tested, and how to report a barrier.
Accessibility statement
Statement date: 2026-10-09
Where we stand
We want the lessons to work with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom and captions. We test part of that automatically. We have not tested the rest.
We do not claim conformance with WCAG or Section 508. No outside party has audited this site. This page lists what is checked and what is not, so you can judge it yourself.
Checked automatically on every change
Every pull request into the branch that production deploys from is built and run through the checks below. The run covers a fixed list of 25 pages at two widths: 1440 pixels (desktop) and 375 pixels (phone). The visitor is signed out and the browser is set to reduced motion.
- The axe-core rules tagged WCAG 2.0 and 2.1, Level A and AA. Any violation fails the run.
- Each page has exactly one main landmark.
- At phone width, every visible link in the site footer is at least 44 pixels high.
- The browser console shows no errors and the page breaks no rule of the site's content security policy.
The exception list for these checks is empty. No known violation on the listed pages is being let through.
The pages in the run:
//lessons//lessons/foundations/01//lessons/foundations/02//lessons/foundations/07//lessons/intermediate/02//lessons/intermediate/03//libraries/va//privacy//accessibility//newsletter//account//verify/expert/sample//contact//for-organizations//resources/facilitation//resources/facilitation/primer//resources/facilitation/workshop-2hr//resources/facilitation/deck//resources/facilitation/demo-scripts//resources/facilitation/worksheets//not-offered//downloads//paths/research/01//404.html
Limits of this check: automated rules find only some barriers. A passing run is not conformance. Pages that are not on the list are not in the run. Signed-in pages are tested signed out.
Lesson video
Each lesson video has an English captions track and a text transcript on the lesson page. A script checks that every video has both files and that the transcript contains the narration. The narration is synthesized speech, not a recorded instructor.
No person who relies on captions or transcripts has reviewed them for us.
Reviewed once, on the earlier design
On 2026-10-01 a scripted browser review of the homepage checked these items:
- Keyboard: the skip link is the first stop and moves focus to the content. The questions list opens and closes from the keyboard. The phone menu opens with Enter, closes with Escape and returns focus to its button.
- Reduced motion: smooth scrolling is off, and the homepage has no autoplay, ticker or count-up animation.
- Text size: with text set to 200% at a 375 pixel width, the page reflowed without sideways scrolling. This was a simulation, not browser zoom.
The site was redesigned on 2026-10-07. That review has not been repeated in full on the current design. Treat it as history, not as a current result.
Not tested
- Screen readers. We have not tested with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack or any other screen reader.
- Real browser zoom and operating-system text scaling.
- Physical devices. Tests run in a desktop browser at set widths. No phone, tablet, switch or voice-control testing.
- The tools at tools.vetslearn.com. They are a separate host and are not in the run described above.
- PDF and document downloads. Worksheets, PDFs and zip packs have not been checked for tags, reading order or form labels.
- Third-party AI tools. If you use a chat tool alongside a lesson, its accessibility is its maker's. We have not tested any of them.
- People. No testing with disabled users and no independent audit.
Report a barrier
Email [email protected]. A person reads it. Include:
- The page address.
- What you were trying to do and what happened instead.
- Your browser and device, and any assistive technology with its version.
- Settings that matter, such as zoom level, text size or high contrast.
Leave out sensitive personal information. If a lesson is blocked for you, name the lesson so we can look at that page first. We do not promise a fix date.
