Tier S: Must-have

Name Category Audience Cost Funding sources
CompTIA Security+ Security Anyone targeting a cleared role. Required for most DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level II positions. $400 exam + $200-500 prep COOL, VR&E, MyCAA, Employer, Self-pay
AWS Certified Solutions Architect: Associate (SAA-C03) Cloud Anyone targeting AWS-shop work, including most federal AI roles. $150 exam + $100-300 prep COOL, VR&E, VET TEC 2.0, Employer, Self-pay
Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104) Cloud Anyone targeting Microsoft Federal, DoD IL5/IL6 environments, or Azure-shop work. $165 exam + $100-300 prep COOL, VR&E, VET TEC 2.0, Employer, Self-pay
NOTES
CompTIA Security+

If you only get one cert, get this one. It's the entry token for cleared IT and security roles. Get it on COOL while you're still in uniform. Renew every 3 years or stack a higher cert that auto-renews it.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect: Associate (SAA-C03)

The default cloud cert in the federal AI market. Pair it with Security+ and you clear most resume screens. Study with hands-on labs, not just video courses. Interviewers can tell.

Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104)

Pick this instead of AWS SAA if your target employer is Microsoft-aligned (much of DoD is). Don't get both at once. Pick the one that matches your target job and go deep.

12 CERTS

Tier A: High value

Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) Cloud Developers shipping containerized apps and ML services. $445 exam + $100-300 prep VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
NIST AI RMF Training (Trustworthy & Responsible AI Resource Center) Federal/compliance Anyone working on federal AI projects, especially around risk and governance. Free Self-pay
DoD 8570 / 8140 IAT Level II baseline Federal/compliance Anyone in a cleared technical role that touches DoD networks. Varies. Security+ ($400) is the cheapest qualifying cert. COOL, VR&E, Employer
CompTIA CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst) Security SOC analysts, threat hunters, and IAT Level II candidates who want something past Security+. $400 exam + $200-500 prep COOL, VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
CompTIA CASP+ (Advanced Security Practitioner) Federal/compliance Senior security engineers and architects in DoD environments. $500 exam + $300-600 prep COOL, VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
NOTES
AWS Certified Solutions Architect: Professional (SAP-C02)

Worth it once you have real AWS experience. Not worth it as your first AWS cert. The questions assume operational knowledge you don't have yet. Pay bump is real but tied to demonstrated work, not the cert alone.

AWS Certified Machine Learning: Specialty (MLS-C01)

The most respected ML cert in the federal market right now. The exam still over-indexes on classical ML, so know your XGBoost and your SageMaker. AWS has signaled a refresh; check the current exam guide before you study.

Microsoft Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102)

Most relevant cert if your target shop uses Azure OpenAI. Heavy on Cognitive Services and Azure AI Foundry. Pair with AZ-104 for a strong Azure stack.

Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer

Solid cert, less federal pull than AWS ML Specialty. Strong on Vertex AI and MLOps practices. Pick this if your target employer is on GCP. Otherwise default to AWS or Azure.

CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional)

Required or strongly preferred for many DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level III and IAM Level II/III billets. Don't take this as your first cert. The experience requirement is real and the exam assumes you've lived the work.

CCSP (Certified Cloud Security Professional)

Strong cert if your work crosses cloud and compliance. Requires 5 years of IT experience with 3 in security and 1 in cloud, or hold a CISSP. Pair with a cloud architect cert for a clear security-architect path.

Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)

Hands-on, performance-based exam. You sit at a terminal and fix real clusters. Hard but high-signal. Worth it if you're moving toward MLOps or platform engineering.

Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)

Easier than CKA and more relevant if you write the apps instead of running the cluster. Good complement to AWS ML Specialty for an ML engineer building inference services.

NIST AI RMF Training (Trustworthy & Responsible AI Resource Center)

Free training from NIST on the AI Risk Management Framework. Not a credential in the traditional sense, but the AI RMF is the framework federal AI work is being measured against. Read the framework, take the training, put it on your resume. status as of 2026-06, verify with the program before relying on it

DoD 8570 / 8140 IAT Level II baseline

Not a single cert. It's a requirement met by holding one of several certs (Security+, CySA+, GSEC, etc.). Know which level your target billet requires and pick the cheapest qualifying cert. 8140 is the current directive; older 8570 references are still common in job posts.

CompTIA CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst)

Useful step-up from Security+ if you're going deeper into security ops rather than architecture. Counts for several DoD 8140 work roles.

CompTIA CASP+ (Advanced Security Practitioner)

Counts for several 8140 IAT III and IASAE work roles. Less name recognition than CISSP in commercial industry but real weight inside DoD. Pick CASP+ if you want a CISSP-tier credential without the 5-year experience requirement.

7 CERTS

Tier B: Situational

Name Category Audience Cost Funding sources
Google Professional Cloud Architect Cloud Engineers in GCP shops. Less common in federal AI work. $200 exam + $200-400 prep VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
Databricks Certified Machine Learning Professional AI/ML Engineers in shops standardized on Databricks (common in fintech, less common in DoD). $200 exam + $100-300 prep Employer, Self-pay
Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) Security Platform/security engineers in container-heavy environments. Requires current CKA. $445 exam + $100-300 prep VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
CIPP/US (Certified Information Privacy Professional) Federal/compliance Anyone whose AI work touches PII, HIPAA, or federal privacy regulation. $550 exam + $200-500 prep VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
CCSK (Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge) Security Earlier-career cloud security pros looking for a foundation before CCSP. $395 exam + $100-300 prep VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor) Security Audit, GRC, and compliance roles. Rare in pure engineering tracks. $760 exam + $300-600 prep VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
CISM (Certified Information Security Manager) Security Security managers and leaders, not individual contributors. $760 exam + $300-600 prep VR&E, Employer, Self-pay
NOTES
Google Professional Cloud Architect

Strong cert, but GCP has a smaller federal footprint than AWS or Azure. Worth it if your target employer is on GCP; otherwise default elsewhere.

Databricks Certified Machine Learning Professional

Vendor cert. Useful if your target shop is on Databricks, near-useless if they're not. Verify before you spend the time.

Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)

Stack on top of CKA if your role spans cluster ops and security hardening. Niche but well-paid where it applies.

CIPP/US (Certified Information Privacy Professional)

Privacy law cert, not a technical cert. Useful if you're heading toward AI governance, compliance, or data ethics work. Skip if you're going pure engineering.

CCSK (Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge)

Cheaper, knowledge-only credential from the Cloud Security Alliance. Solid foundation, weaker resume signal than CCSP. Useful as a stepping stone or when you don't yet meet CCSP experience requirements.

CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor)

Standard cert for IT audit careers. Mostly irrelevant for AI engineering, useful if your target is AI governance or third-party assurance work.

CISM (Certified Information Security Manager)

Management-focused cert. Get this if you're moving into security leadership; skip if you're staying technical. Many senior NCOs and field-grade officers transitioning into security management roles use it.

5 CERTS

Skip

Name Category Audience Cost Funding sources
CompTIA A+ Foundational Help desk and end-user support. Not relevant for AI/cleared engineering. $500 (two exams) + $200-400 prep COOL, VR&E, MyCAA, Self-pay
CompTIA Network+ Foundational Network technicians. Marginal value for AI engineering. $400 exam + $200-400 prep COOL, VR&E, Self-pay
CompTIA Linux+ Foundational Linux sysadmins. Largely replaced by cloud certs in modern stacks. $400 exam + $200-400 prep COOL, VR&E, Self-pay
Generic 'AI Certified' badges (LinkedIn Learning, vendor-marketing certs) AI/ML Nobody who's serious. Varies Self-pay
Paid bootcamp 'certifications' with no industry recognition AI/ML Skip. $5,000-15,000 VR&E, VET TEC 2.0, Self-pay
NOTES
CompTIA A+

Skip unless you're literally targeting a help desk role as a stepping stone. Don't spend transition energy here. Go straight to Security+ and a cloud cert. A+ does not move the needle for AI work.

CompTIA Network+

Skip for AI tracks. The networking knowledge you need for cloud is covered better inside AWS/Azure cert prep. Only worth it if your MOS or current role requires it.

CompTIA Linux+

Skip. Get the Linux skill (you absolutely need it) but build it through hands-on lab work and AWS/Azure cert prep instead. The cert itself doesn't carry weight in AI hiring.

Generic 'AI Certified' badges (LinkedIn Learning, vendor-marketing certs)

Recruiters can tell the difference between an AWS ML Specialty and a 'Certified AI Practitioner' badge from a content mill. Build a portfolio project instead. A working RAG demo on GitHub beats five low-signal badges.

Paid bootcamp 'certifications' with no industry recognition

Some bootcamps issue a 'certificate of completion' and market it like a credential. It isn't one. If you're using VR&E or VET TEC 2.0 for bootcamp training, the value is the skills and the cohort, not the paper. Verify the program's actual hiring outcomes before you enroll, not their marketing claims.
