CURRENT AS OF 2026-06 // LAST REVIEWED JUNE 2026. NOT ON A FIXED SCHEDULE. // COUNT 10 PROGRAMS

SkillBridge

Active with caveats
Eligibility
Active-duty service members within 180 days of separation, with unit commander approval.
What it pays for
You keep your military pay and benefits while a civilian employer trains you for free. The employer eats the training cost. No tuition, no certs paid by DoD.
How to apply
Find a host at skillbridge.osd.mil. Get unit commander sign-off (this is the hard part). Match with the employer. Start up to 180 days before separation.
AI-relevant providers
  • Booz Allen Hamilton
  • Microsoft Federal
  • AWS Federal
  • Google Public Sector
  • Anduril
  • Shield AI
  • MITRE
  • Palantir
  • Leidos
  • CACI
  • Deloitte Federal
  • Accenture Federal Services
NOTES

Best deal in transition if your command will let you go. The catch: many units block it, especially in undermanned MOSs. DoD tightened employer eligibility in 2024 and some shops got cut. Verify your target host is still on the active list before you build a plan around them. status as of 2026-06, verify with the program before relying on it

VET TEC 2.0

Active with caveats
Eligibility
Veterans with at least one day of unexpired Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement. Does not consume GI Bill months if you finish.
What it pays for
Tuition for approved short-duration tech training (coding, cloud, cybersecurity, data, AI). Plus a housing stipend during training.
How to apply
Apply through VA.gov under VET TEC. Pick an approved provider. VA pays the provider in tranches tied to your progress and job placement.
AI-relevant providers
  • Galvanize / Hack Reactor
  • Coding Dojo
  • Sabio
  • Code Platoon
  • Skillstorm
  • Eleven Fifty Academy
NOTES

The original VET TEC pilot ended in 2024. VET TEC 2.0 was authorized but funding has been on a year-to-year fight in Congress. Slots and approved providers have churned. Confirm the program is funded and your target provider is still approved before applying. status as of 2026-06, verify with the program before relying on it

Veteran Readiness and Employment

VR&E (Chapter 31)

Active
Eligibility
Veterans with a VA service-connected disability rating of 10% or more and an employment handicap.
What it pays for
Tuition, fees, books, required tools, certification exam fees, and a monthly housing allowance. Covers degree programs, coding bootcamps, and approved AI/cloud training.
How to apply
Apply on VA.gov (form 28-1900). Get assigned a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC). Build a written rehab plan with them. Your VRC approves each cert, course, or degree.
AI-relevant providers
  • Most accredited universities
  • Many coding bootcamps
  • Cloud cert prep providers (case-by-case)
NOTES

More flexible than the GI Bill if you qualify. Pays for things the GI Bill won't, like individual cert exams. The bottleneck is your VRC. A good one will fund AWS, Azure, Security+ exams. A bad one will tell you to enroll in a 4-year degree you don't need. Push back politely with a written plan.

Post-9/11 GI Bill

Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)

Active
Eligibility
Service members and veterans with at least 90 days of active duty after 9/11/2001. 36 months of benefit at the 100% tier with 36+ months of service.
What it pays for
Tuition and fees up to the in-state public rate (private schools capped, see Yellow Ribbon). Monthly housing allowance at the E-5 with dependents rate for the school's zip code. Up to $1,000/year for books.
How to apply
Apply for your Certificate of Eligibility on VA.gov. Give the COE to your school's VA certifying official. They certify your enrollment each term.
AI-relevant providers
  • CMU MSAIE (online)
  • Georgia Tech OMSCS
  • UT Austin MSAI online
  • Stanford XCS courses (case-by-case)
  • Most accredited online and on-campus AI/CS degrees
NOTES

Best used on a degree, not certs (the GI Bill doesn't cleanly cover single cert exams; VR&E or COOL does). Georgia Tech OMSCS is the highest-leverage move for most: cheap tuition, BAH covers your rent, name brand. Watch your 36 months. Don't burn them on a program you won't finish.

Transition Assistance Program

TAP

Active
Eligibility
Mandatory for service members separating or retiring. Start at least 365 days before separation (180 for retirees).
What it pays for
Nothing directly. It's a series of workshops on resumes, VA benefits, employment, and one of three tracks (education, vocational, entrepreneurship).
How to apply
Your command schedules you. You don't opt in.
NOTES

Quality varies wildly by installation. The VA benefits and education modules are useful. The resume and job-search modules are dated and generic and will not help you land an AI role. Treat TAP as the floor, not the ceiling. The real transition prep is the certs, projects, and network you build on your own time.

Credentialing Opportunities On-Line

COOL (Army, Navy, AF, Marine, USCG, Space Force)

Active
Eligibility
Active-duty (and in some cases Reserve/Guard) service members. Each service runs its own COOL with its own approved credential list.
What it pays for
Civilian certification exam fees, prep materials, and recertification for credentials tied to your MOS/rate/AFSC. Caps vary by service.
How to apply
Go to your service's COOL portal. Find a credential on the approved list for your MOS. Submit a funding request through your education center.
AI-relevant providers
  • CompTIA (Security+, Network+, CySA+)
  • AWS
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Cisco
  • (ISC)2 (CISSP, CCSP)
  • Linux Foundation
NOTES

The single best use of your time while still on active duty. Get Security+ and AWS Solutions Architect Associate on COOL's dime before you separate. The hard part: the credential has to map to your MOS. If it doesn't, your education center may deny it, but sometimes you can win the appeal with documentation. status as of 2026-06, verify with the program before relying on it

My Career Advancement Account

MyCAA

Active
Eligibility
Spouses of active-duty service members in pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-2. Spouse must pursue a license, certification, or associate's degree.
What it pays for
Up to $4,000 total ($2,000/year cap) for tuition, exam fees, and books toward an approved portable career credential.
How to apply
Create an account at mycaa.militaryonesource.mil. Build an education plan with a career counselor. Get the plan approved before you enroll.
AI-relevant providers
  • CompTIA certs (Security+, Network+, Data+)
  • Coursera Google Data Analytics Certificate
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner
  • Some community college data/IT associate degrees
NOTES

$4K is not a lot, but it's enough for a stack of foundational certs. Best path for an AI-adjacent start: Google Data Analytics → AWS Cloud Practitioner → Security+. That stack will get a spouse into a junior cloud or data role. The pay-grade cap excludes most senior NCO and field-grade families, which is annoying but real.

Yellow Ribbon Program

Yellow Ribbon

Active
Eligibility
Veterans entitled to the Post-9/11 GI Bill at the 100% tier (or eligible transferees). The school must participate.
What it pays for
Covers tuition and fees above the GI Bill's annual cap at participating private schools (and out-of-state public schools). VA matches the school's contribution dollar-for-dollar.
How to apply
Confirm your 100% eligibility on your COE. Confirm the school participates and has Yellow Ribbon slots for your program (slots can be capped per program per year).
AI-relevant providers
  • CMU (some programs)
  • Stanford (some programs)
  • Columbia
  • USC
  • NYU
  • Northeastern (Khoury College)
NOTES

Yellow Ribbon at a top private CS/AI program can save you six figures. The catch: slots are limited and often go fast. Some schools cap Yellow Ribbon at the law or business school but not CS. Call the school's veterans office before you apply.

Microsoft Software & Systems Academy

MSSA

Active
Eligibility
Transitioning service members within ~6 months of separation, and select veterans and military spouses. Some tracks require a SkillBridge slot.
What it pays for
Free 17-week technical training in tracks like cloud admin, server/cloud, software dev, and (recently) data and AI/ML. Includes Microsoft cert exam vouchers.
How to apply
Apply at microsoft.com/mssa. Pass an aptitude screen and interview. Cohort start dates are fixed.
AI-relevant providers
  • Microsoft (direct delivery, partner colleges)
NOTES

Strong program for entry into Microsoft's hiring network. AI/ML track availability varies by cohort. Confirm the current track list before you build a plan around it. Hiring outcomes are real but not guaranteed; treat Microsoft interview prep as your job. status as of 2026-06, verify with the program before relying on it

AWS re/Start

Active
Eligibility
Open to veterans, transitioning service members, military spouses, and other underemployed adults. No prior tech experience required.
What it pays for
Free 12-week cloud fundamentals program. Includes the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam voucher and job-placement support.
How to apply
Find a delivery partner at aws.amazon.com/training/restart. Cohorts run regionally and online.
AI-relevant providers
  • AWS (via Per Scholas, Vets in Tech, Code Platoon, and other partners)
NOTES

Solid on-ramp if you're starting from zero. It's a cloud fundamentals program that lands graduates in junior cloud or support roles. From there you can stack AWS Solutions Architect Associate and the AWS ML Specialty. Don't expect to walk out doing AI engineering. status as of 2026-06, verify with the program before relying on it

Program rules and funding shift between fiscal years. Confirm eligibility, funding, and approved providers with the program before you build a plan around it. Last reviewed June 2026. Not on a fixed schedule.
