Who it's for: Veterans and military retirees with a VA disability rating of 100% who live in California.

What it's worth: $100,000+ basic exemption, or $150,000+ if low-income (inflation-adjusted; 2018 example values were $134,706 / $202,060)

Education

California Fee Waiver for Dependents of Disabled Veterans

The child or spouse of a California veteran with a service-connected disability (or who was killed in service) can have mandatory systemwide tuition and fees waived at UC, CSU, and California Community Colleges.

Who it's for: Veterans and military retirees with dependents who live in California.

What it's worth: Waives mandatory systemwide tuition/fees (does not cover nonresident supplemental tuition)

Before you count on it:

  • The veteran parent or spouse must have a service-connected disability (or have died in service) — this tool does not check the veteran's rating for this benefit
  • It waives systemwide tuition and fees only, not nonresident supplemental tuition
