Start with the idea

Choose roles by their work, not by a shared AI title.

Compare the tasks in actual postings. Use evidence to show which you can perform. A gap can guide training without becoming claimed production experience.

Role evidence: Work that demonstrates a task relevant to the particular role.

A made-up teaching example

Two postings say AI engineer. One needs services, releases and support; the other needs research and source checking. Riley has stronger evidence for the research work and lacks recovery evidence.

Ask yourself

Do identical job titles imply identical qualification requirements?

Show the explanation

No. Read the task requirements and match them to inspectable work.

Start with these checks

  • Name evidence for demonstrated tasks.
  • Keep partial evidence partial.
  • Choose a specific next practice target.

Use the different practice case below and check every requirement in its full instructions.

Read the work behind the title. Build a judgment you can explain and a result another reader can inspect.

Prerequisites: know the difference between generated text and source evidence. For configuration vocabulary, use the AI workflow reference. This is public self-study, not official government training, accreditation, a clearance or a professional credential.

Observable outcomes: Compare postings by tasks rather than titles; label artifact support as demonstrated, partial or absent and choose a concrete gap milestone.

Part 1 Read the work behind the title

Compare postings by tasks, outputs, autonomy, technical environment, authorized access and required experience. Applied engineering usually needs executable implementation evidence; platform work needs serving and recovery; security work needs adversarial tests and control implementation; mission analysis needs domain and source judgment. A course artifact establishes the tasks it actually demonstrates.

Employer categories help generate questions rather than predict a uniform experience. Government roles have position-specific qualification and pay rules; contractors may depend on awards and recompetes; research organizations may emphasize scientific evidence; small firms can offer broad ownership with resource uncertainty. Do not rely on unsourced salary bands, guaranteed clearance premiums or referral success ratios. Use dated official postings and distinguish base pay, variable pay and equity when comparing actual offers.

Part 2 Synthetic worked example

Fictional postings both say AI engineer. A requires Python services, release tests and on-call support. B requires policy research and source verification. Riley can defend a policy comparison and a synthetic answer audit, but cannot yet demonstrate deployment recovery. B has stronger current evidence; A becomes a learning target.

Guided practice: write the tempting conclusion first, then underline the fact that does not support it. Rewrite the conclusion with that limitation visible. Identify one additional observation that would change the decision.

Next step: carry your artifact into credential selection in lesson 05; retain assumptions and unanswered questions.
