Tool demo scripts

Four live demos for the free tools. Each has the input to type, what to look for and the point it makes.

Run it yourself that day

Tool names, addresses and form fields on this page were checked against tools.vetslearn.com on 2026-10-09. Tools and their data change. Open every tool you plan to show and run the example before the session. If the live tool differs from this page, teach from the live tool.

Rules for every demo: type where the room can see it, read the tool's data date aloud, and type nothing real. Use the fictional inputs here.

Tools that send text to an AI provider

Skill Translator and Interview Coach send what you type in their text boxes to Anthropic, the AI provider, to write part of the result. Each shows a notice at the box. Read it aloud. Type no names, ID numbers, addresses, unit locations or anything classified or controlled. The AI step is sometimes unavailable. When it is, the tool says so and still returns the rest of its result. Plan the demo so it works either way.

Demo 1: Skill Translator

Tool: Skill Translator · tools.vetslearn.com/skill-translator/

When: early in a session on finding work.

The point

A military occupation code maps to civilian job titles and skills. The tool gives raw material. The person still writes and checks their own resume.

Script

  1. “Who here was a medic? What is the code?” You will hear 68W.
  2. Open the tool. Branch: Army. Code: 68W. Leave the description box empty.
  3. Press Translate. Read what comes back before you comment on it.

Input

Branch: Army · MOS / AFSC / rating: 68W · description box: empty

What to look for (check that day)

  • Title recognized: Combat Medic Specialist.
  • Civilian match: Paramedics (O*NET code 29-2043.00).
  • A list of transferable skills from the tool's own matrix.
  • No resume bullets yet. The tool writes bullets only when the description box is filled in.

Optional second pass

Read the AI notice above the description box aloud. Then type two fictional sentences, for example: “Ran daily sick call for a 40-person unit. Trained four new medics on documentation.” Press Translate again. If the AI step is available you get draft bullets. If it is not, the tool says AI bullet-writing is unavailable and that the matches and skills are still complete.

Say next

“This is a starting point, not your resume. It gives you words a hiring manager recognizes. You supply your real numbers, and you check every line against your own record before it goes out.”

The limit to show

Read the “Data current as of” line and the count of occupation codes. The crosswalk has a date. It is not live.

Demo 2: Benefits Finder

Tool: Benefits Finder · tools.vetslearn.com/benefits/

When: a getting-out session, or a room where many people share one covered state.

The point

States add their own benefits to the federal ones. The tool lists what a profile may qualify for, then tells you to confirm with the agency.

Script

  1. “Who is settling in Texas?” Use the room's real state if the tool covers it. Texas is the worked example.
  2. Build a fictional profile in the tool.
  3. Walk the results top to bottom. Read the data date.

Input

State of residence: Texas · Status: Veteran · VA disability rating: 70%

What to look for (check that day)

  • Texas Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption (Partial), for a 10% to 90% rating.
  • Hazlewood Act Tuition Exemption. Read its conditions aloud. It depends on Texas residency at entry and on discharge, which the form does not ask about.
  • Texas State Parks Disabled Veterans Passport, at a 60% or higher rating.
  • Federal benefits for the same profile, and near-miss items the tool flags.

Say next

“The tool tells you to confirm eligibility and amounts with the agency before you count on them. Do that. Rules and dollar figures change.”

The limit to show

Read the “Data current as of” line and the coverage: federal plus 20 states on 2026-10-09. If someone's state is not covered, say so.

Demo 3: True Salary Calculator

Tool: True Salary Calculator · tools.vetslearn.com/salary/

When: before any talk about negotiating a civilian offer.

The point

Military pay includes allowances that are not taxed. The tool works out a civilian salary that matches it and shows the math.

Input

Paygrade: E-6 · Years of service: 10 · Duty ZIP code: a ZIP near your site · Has dependents: yes · State you'd work in: your state

What to look for (check that day)

  • A civilian-equivalent salary figure, with the calculation shown line by line.
  • The pay-table year the tool is using.
  • Any note the tool gives about the housing figure for the ZIP you entered.

Say next

“The tool says this is education, not financial advice. Check the numbers against your own LES and official sources before you use them.”

Demo 4: Interview Coach

Tool: Interview Coach · tools.vetslearn.com/interview/

When: an interview-prep session. Use the Story Bank tab.

The point

People have the stories. The work is telling one in the order a civilian interviewer expects (situation, task, action, result) without jargon.

Before you type

Read the notice above the story box aloud. Keep it unclassified. Describe the work as you would in a public job interview. No unit locations or operational details. Use the fictional story below, not a volunteer's real one.

Input (fictional)

“During a year-long deployment I ran vehicle maintenance for a transportation unit. I kept a large fleet mission-ready with zero safety incidents while training junior soldiers on the job.”

What to look for (check that day)

  • Military terms in the story flagged from the tool's jargon list. This part does not use AI.
  • If the AI step is available: a rewritten answer in situation, task, action, result order, with bracketed placeholders where a number belongs and none was given.
  • If it is not available: the tool says AI coaching is unavailable and the jargon check is still complete. Demo the jargon flags and have the room restructure the story by hand.

Say next

“Where you see brackets, the tool left a blank for a number you did not give it. Fill in your real figures. Use numbers you can back up.”

After the demo

The tool keeps a session history in that browser. On a shared or classroom computer, press “Clear history” when you finish.

Do not demo a tool the hub marks as not ready.
